

Democrats promoted their proposal to increase the minimum wage. Major issues of the election included income inequality, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as "Obamacare"), which Republicans sought to repeal. Coupled with the 2010 midterms earlier in the Obama administration, this election marked the first time since the Reagan Administration that a two-term president's party suffered net losses in both houses of Congress in both midterm elections. In state elections, Republicans won a net gain of two gubernatorial seats and flipped control of ten legislative chambers. In the House, Republicans won a net gain of thirteen seats, giving them their largest majority since the 1928 elections. Republicans won a net gain of nine Senate seats, the largest Senate gain for either party since the 1980 United States elections. Republicans retained control of the House of Representatives and won control of the Senate. In what is often called a true swing district - the suburbs south of Las Vegas - Joe Heck, a Republican, won his third term, defeating Erin Bilbray, a Democratic political consultant who runs a nonprofit children’s health clinic with her husband, a pediatrician. Horsford was the first African-American to represent Nevada in Congress. Hardy describes himself as a “constitutional conservative” who opposes same-sex marriage, wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act and favors cutting social programs.

Cresent Hardy, a member of the State Assembly, won. Representative Steven Horsford, a Democrat and first-time member of Congress who represents the northern suburbs of Las Vegas and several rural counties, lost even though he was considered the favorite.
